Batik's Metamorphosis

Batik artisans in Surakarta have been seeking ways to restore the popularity of the traditional fabric, which used only to be worn on special occasions.

Even today, certain motifs are considered sacred or reserved for the exclusive use of royalty.

With the availability of cheap textiles like polyester and nylon, batik is often perceived to be unexciting and old-fashioned -- though the Javanese continue to pride themselves on using sacred motifs for traditional ceremonies, such as weddings.

A street parade in Surakarta on Sunday featured contemporary batik designs characterized by shapely construction.

Fashion is all about seizing the moment and, in Surakarta, designers are bringing batik to the forefront.
